The Secret to Getting the Best, Most Beautiful Engagement Photos

When you think about engagement photos, you probably want something that feels like you. Something natural, romantic, beautiful, playful and also something that doesn’t look like you're trying too hard or doing awkward poses.

The good news is that you don’t have to be a model or know what to do with your hands to get photos you love. You just need a few little tricks to help bring out the best version of you two. And yes, it’s easier than you think.

So what’s the secret? It’s all about comfort, connection, and keeping it real. There are also some tips that I've found after years of being a wedding photographer. Scroll on to learn more about how to make that happen.

Find a photographer that aligns with your style

You don’t need just a photographer with a good camera. You need someone who will bring out your personality. Someone who gets your sense of humor, knows how to help you relax, and isn’t afraid to crack a dumb joke to make you laugh mid-photo. Before you book anyone, have a quick chat with them. If you feel comfortable talking with them, you'll probably feel comfortable in front of their camera too. As a photographer, I want my couple to leave their Engagement Session telling me how much fun they had and that they can't wait to see me again for the wedding day!

Don’t Overthink the Posing

The best photos usually happen between the poses. Let your photographer guide you, but don’t worry about “doing it right.” Also don't worry about just looking at the camera and smiling. Laugh, move, talk to each other, those real moments are gold. This is where the magic happens. Some of the best photos come from the silly stuff. Running toward each other. Spinning in circles. Whispering inside jokes. Just focus on having fun together. As your photographer, we will guide you and give you prompts, such as walking together, whispering something funny to each other. The goal isn’t perfection in every single photo, It’s personality. We never want our sessions to look like another, we want your individual personalities and love to come through your images.

Wear what makes you feel good

The best outfit is the one that makes you feel confident and comfy at the same time. You don’t need to dress up unless you want to. Choose something that moves well, makes you feel cute, and won’t have you adjusting it every two seconds. Think about your location and the colors that will compliment and not blend in or clash with the natural backdrop of your location. If you'd like, plan two outfits just in case the first one doesn't work out due to weather, or swap your outfit midway through the session. Also, think about footwear and plan accordingly. If you want to be photographed in heels but have to hike to the location, bring a second pair of shoes for the hike/walk and swap your shoes when it's time to shoot.

*The best way to be sure your outfit is exactly how you want it is to take a video or photos of each other (showing all angles) in the sunlight and look it over to be sure you are loving your look.

A few quick tips:

-Keep the colors soft and simple

-Avoid anything too busy or prints that clash

-Avoid tight fitting clothes that might cling to and highlight areas that you’d rather not have highlighted

-Wear outfits that compliment each other but don't match exactly

-If you're unsure and want my opinion, send photos to us about what you're considering and we're happy to help you decide

How to Prepare Ahead of Time

Prepare early to help your session run smoothly. Here are a few things that can make the day run smoother, stress free and help us all have a blast while getting amazing photos!

  • Prep your clothes the day before and set them out to be sure that you're not forgetting anything. Steam or iron out wrinkles, double check that everything fits right, and make sure you have all your accessories that you need. Don't forget to double check if your bra shows through, or anything else you don't want showing is visible.
  • If you're planning on getting your hair and makeup done, consider doing a trial run before the shoot. This will give you a chance to tweak anything you’re not happy with, and ensure you’re feeling your best when the session day arrives. If you’re doing it yourself, make sure to bring a few essentials along like your lip gloss, and powder.
  • Don't forget about your nails. We will be photographing your hands, hand holding, your engagement ring, your hands around each other. Also, don't forget to clean and polish your ring to make sure that it glistens throughout the session.
  • On the day of your session, try to eat light and healthy, lighter foods will keep your energy up without weighing you down. Also, don't starve yourself and eat a couple hours before the session because you will be your best self if you're not hangry during your session.
  • Pack a few essentials in a large tote bag such as water bottles, a towel if you're doing a beach session, any additional footwear you may need if we're going to be doing a lot of walking during your session, and anything else you may need.
  • Leave your purse and valuables either at home or in your car. You don't want to have to worry about leaving anything behind while we're moving around during your session, and you also don't want to have anything bulky in pockets (men are always guilty of this one). I can hold things for you in my bag if needed but it's not a big bag, but I will always hold onto your car keys and phones so they aren't distracting in the photos.

Bring Props and a Personal Touch

Your Dog(s), a cozy blanket, a bottle of bubbly, or even your favorite coffee mugs can add personality and make you feel more at ease. Just keep it simple and true to you. Props are always a fun and unique touch to the session. Some of my favorites are signs with your wedding date, something significant from your early dating days, sports jerseys, and my absolute favorite is pets. Nothing makes me more excited than when a dog join our session, but I will warn you that they might get more attention than you. If you do bring your pet, consider bringing along a babysitter because you may not want all the photos to include your pups, and they will need someone to care for them throughout the remainder of the session.

Location! Location!

Lastly, and most importantly, L O C A T I O N!

Pick a location that feels meaningful, brings out your personalities, or simply makes you feel happy. Whether it’s a coffee shop where you had your first date, a beautiful beach at sunset, the mountains with nature surrounding you, or somewhere that fits the same vibe as your wedding, the right setting will bring your dream engagement session to life.

Think natural light, open space, and somewhere you can move, laugh, and just be yourselves.

One thing to keep in mind, however, is not only the location but also the time of year. We're Southern California based so luckily almost every time of year is nice here, but there are certain times of the year that certain location just look better, or are less crowded. When you think of the beach summer usually comes to mind for most people, but that is actually the worst time to take photos at the beach because it is over crowded, hot, and parking can be very challenging, especially on a weekend. When you think of the mountains or a natural setting like botanical gardens, the spring and fall is typically the best time with the spring being my favorite because all the flowers are in bloom. If you have a certain look in mind for your session, ask us to help guide you to what will look the best during the time of year and the timing of the day. Another thing to keep in mind is that some locations charge a fee for photography or require reservations if it's a popular spot.

Scroll down for some of our favorite locations in Southern California:

Crystal Cove Beach in Newport, California is a photographer's dream. The stunning views and crystal clear water makes for the perfect backdrop for your engagement session, proposal, or wedding photos.

Shaw's Cove

Shaw's Cove in Laguna Beach, California is a small cove off the coast and is known for beautiful rocks, cliffs, and gorgeous sunset views as the sun dips behind the cliffs. We love photographing Engagement Sessions here because it offers more privacy than most beaches.

Mission San Juan Capistrano

The Mission in San Juan Capistrano is one of the most beautiful places with so many picture perfect spots. This location is perfect for engagement photos and for wedding photos if you're getting married nearby. They do require reservations and a fee for photography, but it's always worth it.

Claremont Botanic Gardens

This location is magic all throughout the year, but the best times are during the Spring and Fall. There are so many gorgeous flowers and so many beautiful trees. The natural beauty of this location is perfect if you're looking for greenery and nature in your Engagement Photos. There is a $20 fee per person for photography at this location.

Mt. Baldy

Although I choose to gate keep the exact spots that I love in Mt. Baldy Mountains, there are a few that I've found that are absolutely stunning and make you feel like you're hundreds of miles away from the business of California. There are mountain views, creeks, trees, and fields in abundance and it is the perfect location if you love nature.

Chino Hills State Park

In Orange County, California you will find many gorgeous parks but Chino Hills State Park is the largest and has endless spots for photos. This park is gorgeous especially during the spring when the California Poppies and Mustard flowers are blooming everywhere.
